No Normal Coffee

By CAMP member Chris Bennett.

As an avid motocamping adventurist and coffee aficionado, I am always exploring ways to enjoy high-quality coffee on the road. I have tried numerous methods: percolators, hand espresso pumps, coffee presses, pour overs, good old instant coffee. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages.

While doing some motocamping reading this winter and jonesing to get out on an adventure riding my BMW F800GT, I came across something new and very different that I wanted to share with the club.  No Normal Coffee is a company in Switzerland that was started by two guys outdoorsy coffee lovers, Alexander and Philippe. Their company specializes in a unique coffee product tailored for outdoor enthusiasts and motorcyclists that leaves every instant coffee I have ever tried in the dust. It is a coffee paste. It comes in an aluminum tube. Think old school toothpaste. Its size, about 6.5”(16.5 cm) by 1.25” (3.2 cm), makes it easy to throw into a tank bag or top case. The coffee paste is designed for easy prep. Since I like my coffee very zesty, I squeeze out about 2 teaspoons (10 ml) with 8 ounces (236) ounces of hot or cold water, stir, and voilà.  I can leave my brewing equipment at home and save some pannier space. For regular strength coffee, cut back to about a teaspoon (5 ml) of No Normal Coffee paste.

The coffee paste is made in Switzerland from 100% Fairtrade Arabica beans sourced from Colombia.  The tube is resealable and makes up to 20 cups of rich, dark roast coffee.  Its flavor profile has hints of chocolate, nuts, and caramel. The paste is lightly sweetened with organic Swiss beet sugar.  The paste also doesn't require refrigeration. With a shelf life of up to 12 months, it’s ideal for the spring and summer riding seasons.

If you are feeling super spicy or are low on water, you can spread the coffee paste on bread or bananas or eat it straight out of the tube.

See you on the road this spring!
